What Your Tears Have Been Trying to Tell You

What neuroscience is teaching us about crying, nervous system regulation, and why emotional healing isn't a sign of weakness.

"I'm sorry." It's amazing how often those words come before tears. Maybe you've said them yourself. "I'm sorry...I don't know why I'm crying."
Maybe it happened in your doctor's office. Or during a conversation with a friend. Or while talking with your spouse after a particularly long week. Maybe the tears showed up at work, and your first instinct was to apologize before reaching for a tissue.
Somewhere along the way, many of us learned that crying is something to be embarrassed about. That being emotional means we're weak. That holding it together is somehow more admirable than letting it out. But what if we've misunderstood tears all along? What if your tears aren't evidence that you're falling apart? What if they're evidence that your body is doing exactly what it was designed to do?
As a Functional Nutrition practitioner, I spend a lot of time helping people see their symptoms differently. Whether we're talking about digestive discomfort, fatigue, hormonal changes, or inflammation, I often say the same thing:
Your body is not your enemy.
More often than not, it's trying to communicate. And perhaps nowhere is that more evident than when we cry. For generations, people have talked about the relief that comes after "a good cry." Long before researchers could study the brain or measure nervous system activity, we instinctively recognized that tears seemed to help. Now, science is beginning to explain why.
What if my tears aren't a sign that I'm falling apart?
When life feels overwhelming, our nervous system works incredibly hard to protect us. It speeds up our heart rate. It sharpens our attention. It prepares us to respond to challenges. This stress response is an amazing gift when we need it. But none of us were designed to stay in that state forever. Eventually, the body begins looking for a way back toward balance. One of those pathways may be emotional crying.
Researchers now believe that crying isn't simply an expression of emotion - it appears to be connected to the body's natural process of nervous system regulation. In other words, crying may be one of the ways your body helps you move from a state of heightened stress toward one of greater calm and recovery.
That doesn't mean every tear has a magical healing power.
It does mean your body may be working for you, even when the experience feels uncomfortable. I find that deeply reassuring. Because it reminds us that our bodies aren't constantly trying to betray us. They're trying to help us.
Why do I usually feel calmer after I finally cry?
Think back to the last time you had a really good cry. Not just watery eyes. The kind where you couldn't hold it back anymore.
What happened afterward?
Maybe your breathing slowed. Maybe your shoulders softened. Maybe you felt exhausted. Maybe you slept better than you had in days. Many people describe feeling lighter, not because their circumstances changed, but because something inside them did. Researchers believe part of this may be related to a shift in the nervous system.
During periods of intense stress, our sympathetic nervous system helps us stay alert and ready for action. It's often called our "fight-or-flight" response. But after emotional crying, the body often begins engaging the parasympathetic nervous system...the part responsible for rest, digestion, repair, and recovery.
You may have heard me talk about the vagus nerve, one of the body's primary communication pathways between the brain and many of our internal organs. It's a key player in nervous system regulation.
While scientists are still learning exactly how emotional crying interacts with the vagus nerve, many of the changes people experience afterward (slower breathing, a lower heart rate, and a growing sense of calm) are consistent with the body shifting toward a more regulated state.
Your body isn't "giving up." It's beginning to settle.

Why does sobbing almost feel like deep breathing?
This is one of my favorite parts of the research because it's something most of us have experienced without ever thinking about it. During a deep cry, our breathing changes.
We take big, uneven breaths.
We sigh.
We pause.
Eventually, those sharp sobs often become slower, deeper breaths. Almost without realizing it, the body begins doing many of the same things we intentionally practice during breathing exercises. It's as though your nervous system already knows the direction it wants to go. I think that's beautiful.
Sometimes we're taught breathing techniques to help calm the nervous system. Sometimes the nervous system seems to guide us there on its own. Not because it's malfunctioning. Because it's remarkably wise.
Why do I sometimes feel worse before I feel better?
If you've ever cried and thought, "That didn't help at all." You're not alone. One of the most interesting findings from recent research is that many people don't feel better immediately after crying.
In fact, it's common to feel emotionally drained, vulnerable, or even more upset at first. But when researchers checked in later, many participants reported a noticeable improvement in mood over time. In other words, emotional relief isn't always immediate. Sometimes the body needs time to settle.
That makes sense when you think about it. Healing is rarely instantaneous. Whether we're talking about digestion, hormones, recovering from illness, or emotional health, our bodies often work through a process rather than flipping a switch. Your nervous system deserves that same patience.

Why does crying with someone I trust feel completely different than crying alone?
Have you ever noticed that not all tears feel the same? Crying alone in your car feels different than crying while someone quietly sits beside you. Sometimes the most healing part isn't the crying itself. It's knowing someone stayed.
Researchers think this may be partly explained by one of our body's connection chemicals: oxytocin. Oxytocin is often called the "bonding hormone," but it's much more than that. It plays an important role in helping us feel safe, connected, and supported.
When we're with someone we trust - a spouse, a close friend, a family member, or even a compassionate therapist - our nervous systems don't have to do all the work alone. We begin to co-regulate. That's simply a fancy way of saying that one calm nervous system can help another nervous system find its footing. I love that idea. Because it reminds us that healing has never been meant to be a solo project.
We're wired for connection. Sometimes another person's quiet presence becomes part of our body's own healing process.
What's actually happening inside my brain?
Scientists are still uncovering the full story, but emotional crying appears to involve several of the body's natural messengers.
Endorphins (our body's own pain-relieving chemicals) may help soften emotional distress. Oxytocin supports feelings of safety and connection. Prolactin, a hormone involved in many different body systems, may also play a role in emotional crying, although researchers are still exploring exactly how.
None of these work in isolation. Our brains, hormones, nervous systems, and emotions are constantly communicating with one another. That's something I wish more people understood. We're not a collection of separate body parts. We're beautifully interconnected.
And when one system begins moving toward healing, others often follow.
What doesn't the science support?
One thing I appreciate about good science is that it helps us separate what we know from what we only assume.
For years, many of us heard that emotional tears "flush toxins" from the body or dramatically lower cortisol levels. At this point, researchers haven't found strong evidence to support those claims. But here's the good news:
We don't need those ideas to appreciate the value of crying. The research that's emerging is arguably even more encouraging. Rather than acting like a detox, crying appears to support something much more foundational: our body's built-in systems for regulation, connection, and recovery. And, like so many aspects of health, every person's experience is different. Not everyone feels better after crying.
The circumstances matter.
The support around us matters.
Our emotional history matters.
Science doesn't suggest that crying is a cure for emotional pain. It suggests that crying may be one of the many ways our wonderfully designed bodies try to help us move through it.
So...what have your tears been trying to tell you?
I think about this often in my work. Whether someone comes to me because they're struggling with digestive symptoms, chronic fatigue, hormone changes, inflammation, or simply feeling like they don't recognize themselves anymore, the deeper question is usually the same:
"Can I trust my body?"
It's an understandable question. Especially if your body has felt unpredictable for a long time.
But over and over again, I find myself coming back to the same truth:
Your body is rarely trying to punish you.
More often, it's trying to protect you. It's trying to adapt. It's trying to communicate. It's trying to guide you back toward balance. Tears may be one expression of that wisdom. Long before neuroscience could explain the vagus nerve, oxytocin, or nervous system regulation, people understood the comfort of "a good cry." They didn't have the scientific language for it. They simply noticed what happened afterward.
Perhaps science isn't discovering something entirely new. Perhaps it's catching up to what our bodies have known all along. So the next time tears come unexpectedly, maybe you don't have to rush to apologize. Maybe you don't have to wonder what's wrong with you.
Maybe you can simply pause for a moment and remember this: your body may not be falling apart. It may be doing what it has always been designed to do...working, with incredible wisdom, to help you heal.
